Salem
Cemetery History
Our
Experience :: History ::
Past Activity
There have been many reports over the years of hauntings taking place
in Salem Cemetery. Most people growing up in the area of the
Durham Region have heard the tales of this site. There is a story of a
grounds keeper who watches over the cemetery as a guardian. Others have
seen shadows, apparitions and other strange activity. Here is an email
we received from one of our readers:
I was looking at your sight
when I saw the Salem Cemetery. I read the second paragraph then
called my husband in to see it. It describes exactly what I saw when
I was there with a friend of mine. We are both "ghost
hunters" and Salem is a hot spot. As I read further I two know of
this man you speak of and of the
wolves. My experience with the man and lady were quite
extensive. They are not friendly spirits and do not like you being
there. I have had conversations with them, mostly the woman. She
doesn't like the intrusions into the site. The man is also not
friendly all the time. When we were there we were sitting on a patch
of grass by the cemented tomb stones that had fallen over. Around
11:00pm that night the whole cemetery was buzzing with ghosts. I
looked over to my right and there was a little boy sitting two feet
away from me watching me. He was sitting cross legged and resting his
elbows on his legs holding up his chin. He just sat and stared. He
was wearing brown pants with suspenders the pants only came to
mid-calf and were tightly cuffed. He had on a white blouse-like shirt
and no shoes. His hair was short dirty blonde.
My friend that was
sitting beside me started to feel anxious and said that who ever was
on her side of the cemetery was angry, almost irate. We then shortly
heard a howl, it was not exactly animals but it wasn't the wind
either. We then heard twigs breaking in the woods that separate the
cemetery from the golf course. I knew that it wasn't of this world.
I was not nervous but we packed it in anyway.
As we were walking out
of the cemetery and past the last row of stones closest to the road
there was this big loud howl coming from inside the cemetery and I
felt a push. I promptly turned and spoke to the man and lady telling
them that it wasn't nice and that they should be more hospitable to
company. As I walked out the howling started again and the push
was from behind me.
