Building in Lindsay

Past Activity

Here is the first email we recieved from the owner about the activity which was going on in this building.

Where to start?! My girlfriends and I often come into the building very late at night. We always encounter a friendly male ghost who likes to make his presence known. We have nicknamed him Henry for some reason. Every morning when I arrive and every evening before I leave, I greet Henry and ask him how he is doing, sometimes he answers with a little knock or creak in the floor or in the backroom. The backroom and hallway are his favorite places to lurk. He has never scared me, I have always felt that he is extremely protective of this building and myself in general.

One day in the winter, I started noticing a little movement in the closet area, which I've converted to a change room. I looked over and saw a little boy, at first I was alarmed but then I realized he wasn't of this world. I'm sensitive to these types of things so it doesn't always catch me off guard. I told him it was okay as long as he was just there to play and not to be menacing. I feel he is more confused at why all these people are in here. Every little boy that comes in here goes immediately to that room to play with the lights. I always here giggling and the little boys talking with "no one" in that room.

The only area that makes me uncomfortable and some other friends/visitors is the backroom area and the one small bathroom stall. You feel watched and uncomfortable. In the basement there are many original structures in tact showing the old coal shoots and a connection through the stores (the downtown buildings all use to be connected underground by tunnels). Before the store opened as my father and I were cleaning out the furnaced I had someone pull my hair several times.

Henry made his first very known presence around Christmas time, I got the feeling he was very excited to have the building restored and back up to a store instead of sitting vacant. I was standing one evening to leave and my back was to a doorway leading to the back. All of a sudden I felt a hand on my back, it moved across my back and then gave me a friendly squeeze. I felt very warm and comforted. I knew it had to be my mysterious visitor approving of the changes made to the building.

Throughout Christmas I was dealing with a very difficult tenant that lived on the very top floor. During one discussion she claimed that she started having horrible nightmares about being burned alive and it was spooking her so bad she started unplugging appliances. We had to ask her to leave for other reasons and found she had mostly destroyed the apartment with pets. I have since started gutting that floor and hoping to restore it to it's former glory. However, the top floor makes me very uncomfortable. I can't stand to be in there long, perhaps it's the energy from the previous tenant. I am not sure. We did have an incident in February in which I was at the store alone, very late, and I heard someone running up the back steps to that apartment. I thumped like crazy on the back door and told them to leave. I doubt they could hear me. When the police arrived it appeared that the footsteps stopped half way up and then came back down.

When people walk by they always ask who is living in the apartments upstairs, we reply no one and they mention that someone is definitely up there. When we check, there is nothing. Lights will also go on and off by themselves at times in the apartments. Previous tenants have said that they do not notice any activity, again it just might be my sensitivity.

For whatever reason, I am extremely attached to this building and very protective. It must sound so peculiar, but it's like an obsession, I love old buildings and this one has certainly captured my heart.
